Tanaka holds an MA in Creative Writing from the University of Brighton where he wrote This is How it Happens, a research grounded theatre piece on male survivors of sexual violence. Since then he has worked with national media organisations including the BBC and the Independent on the ways in which they tell stories about sexual assault and violence.

Tanaka is currently in the initial stages of a project examining the experiences of professionals (particularly within the NHS and related contexts) who hear disclosures of sexual violence in the course of their work with a view to presenting the findings in a way which advances and inspires better support for such essential staff.

Tanaka works widely with techniques for integrating creative praxis with research and learning. He has worked as a workshop leader in schools, a guest lecturer at universities and as a facilitator in other public spaces.
